Kalady Travel Guide


A village named Kalady, meaning ‘feet’ in Malayalam, is located on the banks of the Periyar river. An important Hindu religious destination, it is famous as the birth place of Adi Sankara, the founder of the Advaita order. This village, at that time known as Sasalam, is located in the Ernakulam district. Sri Sankaracharya, born in A.D 788, was the only son of Sivaguru and Aryamba, a Keralite Namboodri Brahmin couple.




How To Reach Kalady


By Air

The Nedumbassery International Airport in Kochi is the nearest airport to Kalady that is placed at a distance of about 35 km. Once at the airport, you can opt for taxi services to go to Kalady, which may cost around INR 400. The airport at Kochi is well -connected to all major the prime destinations in India and a number of foreign cities as well. From Delhi, Bangalorem Chennai and Mumbai, direct flights are also available.

By Train

The nearest railhead to Kalady is in Alwaye (Kalady). It is an important railhead in the Southern Railway. It is well- connected to all the important stations in the country.

By Road

Kalady is accessible by regular bus services from all the important cities in Kerala. Both, state-run buses and private buses are available for the same. To reach Kalady, services of super deluxe buses are also available from Bangalore, Kochi, Kozhikode, Chennai, Trivandrum, Palaghat, Salem and Coimbatore.
