Mallapuram Culture


History:

Mallapuram is not only popular for its rich literacy heritage but is also renowned for its great political lineage. In the ancient times, the place has been the epicenter of Moplah Rebellion and  Khilafat movement which form a part of the Indian Independence struggle and helped in fighting against colonialism and feudalism.  

People and Religion:

The people residing in the Mallapuram district of Kerala are peace loving and well adapted to a traditional lifestyle. They are known for their warm hospitality which in turns make the tourists feel at home. Many of the renowned writers and poets hail from this part of the land. Featuring a large number of temples, churches and Mosques, the landscapes of Mallapuram are happy abode of religious harmony. 2 kms away from the heart of the Mallapuram, lies Nedukayam which is famous not only for the dense forest but also for the settlement of primitive tribes. The Kottakkal area of the district is famed as the center for Ayurvedic treatment and is frequented by a large number of tourists for the style of treatment followed by them. Since ancient times, the coastal town of Ponnani has been famous as the trade centers.

Fair and Festivals:

Mallapuram, the temple town of Kerala district, is popular to feature a large number of Churches, temples and mosques. This religious learning center celebrates a large number of festivals and during these festivity days, a large number of tourists gather to become a part of these celebrations. Some of the important festivals celebrated in the Mallapuram town are:

Thirumandhamkunnu Pooram:

The Thirumandham kunnu temple, located 2 kms to the West of Perinthalmanna, in the Kozhikode-Palakkad State highway, is one of the three significant Bhagavati temples of Kerala. The temple gets immersed in the preparation of the Pooram festival during the months of March and April. The cultural feast organized during this festive celebration is one of the major attractions. The festival is celebrated for seven days which involves daily Pooja rituals. During the Mangalya Pooja, a large number of young women visit the temple in thousands and offer prayers for a good wedlock.

Kottakkal Pooram:

Kottakkal, extensively popular as the seat of Ayurvedic treatment, is very famous for the Kottakkal Pooram festival celebrations. The festival is grandly celebrated during the months of March and April and attracts many devotees for its cultural festivity. The Kottakkal Pooram festival is celebrated for seven days and various eminent classical artists of the country can be seen performing at the venue.

Nilambur Pattu:

Nilambur Pattu festival conducted during the month of January is an ancient festival. Thousands of devotees gather to witness the week long celebrations. The Tribal chieftains have a significant role in performing the rituals and the festival is celebrated to remember the ancient war and hunting.

Kondotty Nercha:

Kondotty Nercha festival is celebrated in Pazhayangadi Mosque of Kondotty. The celebrations continue for a week. The Nercha has an inter-religious  expression in its ‘Petty Varavu’ and devotees gather in thousands making the carnival proportion with hectic trade and amusements.

Puthenpalli Nercha:

The Puthenpalli Nercha is another popular festival to be celebrated in the South-West border of Mallapuram district. Devotees gather in lakhs to attend the yearly festival. During the festival celebrations, Ney Choru is distributed among the devotees and poor.

Omanur Nercha:

Omanur Nercha is a famous mosque festival in Malappuram district, celebrated for commemorating the  martyrs of the Mallapuram district.

Vairamkode Vela or Theeyaattu:

Vairamkode Vela is another temple festival, celebrated every year, during the month of February. This important festival is celebrated for six days. The major attraction of this festival is the processions. A large number of processions coming from Variamkode display various art forms like Pulikkali, Pootha, Kattalan, Thira etc. Great fireworks are performed after the midnight. During the Kanalattam ritual, the devotees can be seen walking around on live coals. This ritual is performed early in the morning.

Art Forms:

Kalampattu:

Kalampattu is a folk ritual art form which is over 600 years old and belongs exclusively to the Mallapuram district of Kerala. This ancient art form is believed to be originated from the Ayyappa and Bhadrakali temple located in the Mallapuram. This dance form is performed by a group of five to fifteen people and is usually performed around the Kolam. An elaborate picture of the two deities is drawn on the floor by using five colors.

Mudiyettu:

Mudiyettu is another form of ritualistic folk art performed in the Bhadrakaali temple of Mallapuram. The performance is based on the mythological story of Darikavadham which elaborates the killing of demon Darika by the goddess but the story has been slightly modified from the real one. The various ritualistic arts like Teyyam,  Theeyaattam, Patayani, Tirayaattamare preformed as a form of offering to the victims divinities and are generally performed by ambalavaasis, the people who served in the temple. The Mudiyattu art form is generally performed during the months of Meenam and Vrischikam.
