Thiruvananthapuram Beaches

Although Thiruvananthapuram does not have a beach of its own but it lies in close proximity to a number of well-known beaches:

Kovalam Beach

Located at a distance of around 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram, Kovalam beach is a very popular world-renowned beach. Till the years 1960’s, Kovalam was a quaint fishing village with narrow lanes, thatched houses. But slowly it became a famous beach with crystal-clear sea waters amongst backpackers and hippies. Today, it attracts a crazy number of tourists from all around the world. The beach is flanked by a number of budget as well as luxury resorts, perfect for accommodation along with some eateries and cafes. There are a number of Ayurveda centres where you can enjoy several massages, therapies and treatments to rejuvenate your tired sense. You can also see various street sellers sitting in their stalls selling knick-knacks, handicrafts and reasonably priced beachwear. Irrespective of heavy tourist activity, Kovalam beach still retains its old charm, which makes it one of country’s finest beaches.

The natural bay is covered by 2 rocky headlands. Kovalam comprises of four beaches-Lighthouse beach, Samudra beach, Eve’s beach and Ashok beach. These beaches are located just a few minutes away from each other. The beaches on the southern part are quite crowded but those on the northern side are isolated and are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, catamaran trips, and water sports activities.

Shanghumugham Beach

Shanghumugham beach, located at a distance of about 8 km westwards from the city of Thiruvananthapuram, is quite close to the Thiruvananthapuram international airport. Closely located is an indoor recreation club, Chacha Nehru Traffic Training Park for children and a popular star-fish shaped restaurant, favorite of the visiting tourists. Another major attraction is the Matsya Kanyaka, which is a huge 35 m long sculpture of a reclining mermaid in white.  If you love being in seclusion, this is a perfect beach for you.

Varkala

Varkala beach, around 51 km northwards of Thiruvananthapuram city is a pristine beach in the Varkala, a serene village on the outskirts of the district. The main beach of Varkala is also known as The Papanasam beach, around 10 km from the main village. Nearby is a natural spring as well, which is well-known for having curative and medicinal properties. From this attraction only, the beach gets its name. Just take a dip in the water and remove the impurities of your body and soul.  Other attractions near the beach are a 2000-year-old Vishnu Temple, called the Janardhanaswamy Temple as well as the Ashramam - Sivagiri Mutt.
