Monuments in Kannur


Kannur district lies towards the north of Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. The district has a significant contribution in the political, religious, cultural and industrial heritage of the state. It is rightly described as “The Land of Loom and Lores”. The place is frequently becoming popular among the tourists for its beautiful beaches, interesting folk art, music, religious practices and festivities and historic sites. The landscapes of the Kannur make for a perfect historic destination as it is home to some of the traditional industrial sectors of Kerala.

The historical destination of Kannur was in the erstwhile times an important port on the Arabian Sea for carrying out trade with Arabia and Persia during 12th and 13th centuries.

The St. Angelos Fort is featured as one of the important monuments  in Kannur. The monument is being preserved and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The fort was commissioned by the first Portuguese Viceroy, Don Francisco De Almeida in 1505. After 1505 the fort came under the control of British rulers in 1790. During this period the fort was renovated to make it one of the most important military station in Malabar. Enjoy the aerial view of the spectacular Moppila Bay and the Dharmadom Island while standing atop the St. Angelos Fort. The fort is also popularly referred to as Kunnar fort.  Being built facing the Arabian sea, the fort allows visitors to witness the majestic sunrise and sunset views.
