Periyar Travel Guide


The most popular wildlife reserve of South India, Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is also referred to as Thekkady. Spread in an area of 925 sq. km., it is one of the 27 tiger reserves in the country. Periyar is home to over 40 mammal species, 160 kinds of butterflies, 54 types of reptiles and 320 avifauna species. Therefore, as far as wildlife population is concerned, Periyar wildlife sanctuary is one of the richest wildlife reserves.




How To Reach Periyar


By Air

Kochi is the nearest international airport to Periyar that is located at a distance of around 140 km. This airport is well-connected with prime cities of India as well as important destinations abroad, through regular flights.

By Train

The nearest railway station to Periyar is Kottayam that is around 11 km away. This railway station is connected with prime railway stations of India through a good network of trains.

By Road

A good network of roads connect Periyar to major cities of Kerala such as Alleppey, Kumarakom and Cochin as well as to other parts of South India. Regular bus service is available from other cities to Periyar.
