Edakkal Caves in Wayanad

Edakkal Caves are two natural caves which are located in Edakkal in the Wayanad district of Kerala. The caves are set at a height of 1200 meter above sea level. There is an uphill trek which the tourists need to cover to reach the caves.

Edakkal Caves is a site which holds immense historical and archaeological significance. The carvings on the wall of the caves date back to the Neolithic era and they were discovered by Fred Fawcett in 1890 while he was on a hunting trip.

One can find pictorial writings on the walls of the caves which date back to 6,000 BC. The Stone Age carvings found in the cave are rare. The cave is set on two different levels. While the first level can be seen as a small opening, the second level is large and much bigger than the first level.

Edakkal Caves is a must visit for history buffs, adventure seekers and photographers. The best time to visit the caves is in between the months of October and February. The place is located at a distance of 260 kms from Bangalore which makes it well-connected to major parts of the country.
