Vellayani Lake is a freshwater lake and a popular picnic spot located at a distance of 7 km from Kovalam. Tourists come here for a boat ride or to spend the time hailing the charm of the landscape while they chat. During Onam festival enthusiasm takes over as the popular traditional boat races are organized here. This lake has many stories that tell about its inception; like the story which tells about a thirsty beggar. The beggar visited a saint who was meditating. Upon seeing the beggar the saint started pouring water to his palms from the pot which was nearly empty. The saint chanted a hymn and threw the empty pot a few meters away. Gradually, a big lake emerged where the pot had landed and this lake is Vellayani Lake.
